Parenting two autistic teenagers

Raising two autistic teenagers comes with unique challenges, especially when it comes to managing screen time. My eldest son, who is almost 18, was particularly drawn to electronics. He would spend hours glued to the screen, and any attempt to intervene would lead to intense fits and tantrums. My husband and I felt lost and concerned, unsure of how to redirect his attention. Then, something unexpected happened. Our younger son, who is 14, came home from school one day with a container of slime. Initially, I was hesitant—it seemed like just another mess to clean. However, as I sat down and started playing with the slime alongside him, something changed. We were laughing and squishing the gooey substance between our fingers, completely absorbed in the moment. It was then that I noticed my eldest son's interest pique. He set aside his tablet and approached us, intrigued by our laughter and the strange, sticky substance. He joined in, and for the first time in a long while, we all played together as a family. That was our lightbulb moment. I thought, "What if we could create fun family activities to encourage him to step away from the electronics?" Inspired, my husband and I sprang into action. We transformed our living room into a playground. We set up a makeshift bowling alley, crafted a ping pong table from scratch, and even hosted our version of family Olympics. These simple, home-based activities did more than just occupy their time—they brought us closer together as a family. They allowed my sons to engage in the physical world, bond over shared fun, and significantly reduce the time spent on electronic devices. For parents of autistic children, I'm here to share insights on nurturing strong, healthy kids. My husband and I are avid Marvel and comics fans, and we're eager to discuss all aspects of parenting—from navigating the school system to redesigning your home for active, engaging play without relying on electronics.
